The journey takes about two hours each way, so the drive itself becomes part of the day's transition—from modern Dhaka into one of Bengal's most historically significant areas. As you approach Sonargaon, the atmosphere begins to change. This is where the story of your journey truly begins.

Your first major stop is Goaldi Mosque, a compact historic mosque that offers a more intimate encounter with Bengal's architectural heritage.Unlike the grand scale of some of South Asia's better-known monuments, Goaldi Mosque is modest in size, allowing you to appreciate its proportions, brickwork, and architectural details up close. Your guide will place the mosque within the broader history of Sonargaon and explain why this area became such an important center of Bengal's political and commercial life. Take your time here. Continue to the Folk Arts & Crafts Museum, where the focus shifts from architecture to Bengal's artistic traditions. Rather than seeing the museum as an isolated attraction, consider it an introduction to the living craft traditions that still survive outside Dhaka. Then comes the experience many travellers have been waiting for Panam City. Walking into Panam City feels like stepping through a doorway into another era. Along its historic streets stand grand merchant houses, their façades bearing traces of wealth, ambition, and a trading culture that once made this part of Sonargaon prosperous. Today, many of the buildings stand abandoned. Nature has begun reclaiming sections of the architecture, with vegetation appearing around old brickwork and weathered façades. Yet the scale and character of the buildings still offer clues about the lives that once filled these streets. This is where history becomes intensely visual. For photographers, Panam City offers architectural textures, fading colors, dramatic lines and an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else around Dhaka.

After exploring Panam City, take a break for a traditional Bengali lunch. This is not simply a pause between attractions. Food is an important part of understanding Bangladesh, and a local meal offers a chance to experience flavours and dishes that are part of everyday Bengali life. The exact menu may vary according to availability and arrangements, but the emphasis is on a genuine local dining experience rather than a standard tourist meal.

The character of the journey changes completely now. Leave the historic town behind and head toward the Meghna River, where you'll board a traditional wooden boat for the crossing. On the other side lies a rural char—a river-shaped landscape created and continually reshaped by the movement of the Meghna. Here, Bangladesh feels far removed from Dhaka. You'll see farming landscapes, open spaces and everyday rural life shaped by the river.
